BECOME A DISCIPLE-MAKER

Receive accompaniment and training, to empower you to walk with others
on their journey to become disciples of Jesus and missionary disciples

In the context of walking with others on their journey to become disciples of Jesus and missionary disciples, accompaniment is walking alongside another on their pilgrimage to our heavenly Father. You cannot walk this pilgrimage for anyone. Each one must walk their own pilgrimage. However, you can act as a guide along the way. Like a mountain climbing guide, you have been through this journey before, and continue your own personal journey.  Through the wisdom gleaned from your own guides and from experience, you can help others navigate their pilgrimage. You know where to go to reach the goal, and so you can lead the pilgrim toward their destination, which is Christ himself. You have not reached your final destination (i.e. heaven), nor have you achieved perfection in your own pilgrimage. You are, however, further along the path and that means you can guide new pilgrims who are just starting their journey. As you continue further down the pilgrimage route, you can continue to direct pilgrims along the paths you have already travelled.

The goal is not for the pilgrim to follow you. Christ himself is the leader on this pilgrimage of becoming a disciple and disciple-maker. Therefore, the goal of the pilgrim is to follow Jesus, with you as their guide. As Evangeli Gaudium 170 states: "Spiritual accompaniment must lead others ever closer to God, in whom we attain true freedom"

We offer training and accompaniment to:

  • Catholic leaders who want to foster a culture of making disciples and disciple-makers in their parish, association, community or organisation

Follow Me

We desire to see a generation of young Catholics saying YES as disciples of Jesus to follow God’s plans and transform the Church and society. And we believe it’s important to collaborate as groups (parishes, communities, associations, movements etc.) to strengthen each other with our unique gifts and contributions, so that we can move forward together in this work of forming young disciples and empowering them to be disciple-makers.

‘Follow Me’ has been a great model of doing precisely this in various countries in Europe over the last 12 years, where 800 Catholic young adults have experienced being accompanied in a journey of discipleship and their lives being transformed as a result. Quite a few have now taken up leadership roles in their parishes, dioceses, communities and movements as disciple-makers.

So we would love to be part of initiating ‘Follow Me’ in Australia and partner with Catholic groups who are keen on forming young adults as ‘missionary disciples’. Pope Francis first used the term “missionary disciples” in his apostolic exhortation, ‘Evangelii Gaudium’. He continued to voice his desire for the laity to become missionary disciples throughout his papacy.

‘Follow Me’ assists groups with 'jump-starting' the process of establishing a culture of discipleship, by taking participants through a series of rich experiences, which produce a kind of greenhouse effect for their own growth as a disciple, and catalyses them to better serve within your community.

It provides inputs, environments and processes through a collaborative effort that can otherwise take a long time for a group to put into place on their own. If participants come back to help on the team of the next ‘Follow Me’, it also trains them further with experiences of being a disciple-maker, and will form them to accompany others in your community.

Discipleship Training School (DTS)

In general, we encourage Catholics of any age who want to,

  • Establish good foundations or grow as disciples of Jesus,

  • Take steps into Christian ministry and missionary work

  • Discover more of their calling

to do a 'Discipleship Training School' (DTS) with us.

In brief, a DTS is a 6-month program blending classroom learning, small group activities, personal reflection, practical service, and community living. The course begins with a 3-month lecture phase and concludes with a 3-month cross-cultural practical outreach.

We recommend YWAM Canberra to Catholics who wish to do a ‘Discipleship Training School’ (D.T.S) with ‘Youth With A Mission’ (YWAM). Kerygma Australia works in partnership with YWAM Canberra

You can find more details about the next DTS here:
